COMeT Lab
Conservation Oceanography and Marine Technology
COMeT Lab:
Turning ocean science into action for endangered whales.
Here, at COMeT Lab, we combine cutting-edge ocean technology with research to protect marine life. Using underwater gliders, drones, and satellites, we study endangered whales and their habitat to inform conservation strategies.
Our name honours “Comet,” a North Atlantic right whale, which lived for decades before his life ended in a ship strike. His story reflects the urgent threats these whales face—but also the hope that drives our work. Our mission is to protect these giants and ensure their survival for generations to come.

Research
Conservation oceanography is an emerging field that applies advanced ocean science and technology to help resource managers and policymakers ensure marine sustainability. The COMeT Lab uses tools like underwater gliders, shadowgraph cameras, drones, and satellites to study North Atlantic right whale biology, ecology, and habitat, informing conservation efforts for this species and beyond.
