Cody Carlyle

Ph.D Student

Cody started his PhD in Biology with the Davies lab in the spring of 2022. He is originally from British Columbia where he was first captivated by the ocean. Cody received a BSc. Honours in Marine Biology from the University of British Columbia in 2016 (studying breathing mechanics in cetaceans), and an MSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Manitoba in 2021 (studying spatial and feeding ecology in ringed seals) before coming to the Davies lab. He also supplemented his research experience with work in biological consulting, fisheries observing, and ecotourism. These experiences have had Cody working in biology and ecology on the coasts of B.C. and high-Arctic Nunavut before coming to Saint John, NB to study the Atlantic coast.

Cody was drawn to the Davies lab out of an interest in the role that large predators such as whales play in marine ecosystems, and their status as indicators of healthy oceans. His research is focused on using high resolution satellite imagery as a method to detect North Atlantic right whales and other whales. He hopes this work can improve our knowledge on whale populations to better manage human impacts on these species such as the endangered North Atlantic right whale.

Outside of biology and ecology, Cody enjoys outdoor recreation such as climbing, hiking, fishing, camping, and SCUBA, playing and watching various sports with an emphasis on baseball, and reading books in his ever-expanding library.
