Sam Loutet
MSc Student
Sam started her MSc in the Davies Lab in 2024. Her projects aims to advance glider-mounted shadowgraph technology with artificial intelligence to automate copepod abundance and distribution measurements in North Atlantic right whale habitat.
Originally from unneeded Coast Salish territory (Vancouver, BC), she grew up constantly in and around water. She loved exploring the beaches of the Pacific Ocean and lakes throughout the country competing and coaching in the sport of sprint canoe.
Her passion for the natural environment fuelled her to get a BSc in Earth Systems Science at McGill University, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2023. Her undergraduate thesis focussed on the impact of hypoxia on seafloor microbial sulphur cycling in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At McGill she also worked on research projects studying soil pollution, climatic impacts in Montréal, climate change adaptation in fisheries, and environmental influences on Arctic marine microbes.
On top of research, she is also a community climate organizer with Sustainable Youth Canada, working towards collective liberation and environmental justice. She enjoys reading good books, swimming in cold water, watching trashy reality television, and spending time with her two cats, Céline Dion and Soup.
